Did You Know?

Our English word “Bible” comes from the Greek words “Biblos” and “Biblion” which mean “The Book”. It is not called Biblos because there are sixty-six books, but because of its preeminence over all books. It is named “The Book” in Psalm 40:7 and Hebrews 10:7.

The Bible is the literal Word of God to mankind. It is inspired (God breathed), inerrant (without error), infallible (incapable of making mistakes or being wrong), and the sole source of revelation from God to man.

Famous Quote on the Bible:

“The Bible is a vein of pure gold, unalloyed by quartz or any earthly substance. This is a star without a speck; a sun without a blot; a light without darkness; a moon without its paleness; a glory without a dimness. O Bible! It cannot be said of any other book that it is perfect and pure; but of thee we can declare all wisdom is gathered up in thee, without a particle of folly. This is the judge that ends the strife, where wit and reason fail. This is the book untainted by any error; but is pure, unalloyed, perfect truth.”

  C H Spurgeon

The Shortest Verse in the Bible

The shortest verse in the Bible is John chapter eleven verse 35 which says, “Jesus Wept”. Even though it is the shortest verse in the Bible, it gives us a tremendous amount of understanding of our Savior.

The verse before us allows us to see Christ understanding of man’s condition, His compassion for man, His feelings toward sin and its effect on man, and His love for man among many other things.

Sometimes the shortest verses, the smallest words, and the smallest of actions can have the largest impact for the cause of Christ. Oh that we would be reminded of this today and see even in this shortest of verses the very large picture of Christ that it presents to us that we might know Him more intimately today!

The Longest Verse in the Bible

The longest verses in the Bible is Esther chapter 8 verse 9 where the Bible says, “Then were the king's scribes called at that time in the third month, that is, the month Sivan, on the three and twentieth day thereof; and it was written according to all that Mordecai commanded unto the Jews, and to the lieutenants, and the deputies and rulers of the provinces which are from India unto Ethiopia, an hundred twenty and seven provinces, unto every province according to the writing thereof, and unto every people after their language, and to the Jews according to their writing, and according to their language.”

This wonderful verse deals with the calling of the King’s scribes to write out a decree to be sent throughout the land reversing an earlier decree devised by Haman and advised to the King to destroy the Jewish people throughout the land.  The decree would have went out and the Jewish people would have been destroyed if not for God’s working behind the scenes through Queen Esther.

Read about this wonderful working of the Lord to save His people in the short book of Esther (10 chapters) this week.  It is a wonderful account of God’s preservation of His people and His workings behind the scenes of life to accomplish His will
